“‘Why did God give me a baby, then suddenly I’m going to die?’ That’s the only thing he said.”

February 2022 brought heartbreaking news to Carla: her husband Johnny was diagnosed with terminal cancer and with a year to live.

With their 2-year-old son Bryant, and Carla’s status as a foreigner in Singapore, she felt lost and afraid about what the future holds. Carla stood by Johnny up to his final days. They experienced fierce support from their loved ones, the unwavering aid of a compassionate medical social worker, and dedicated palliative care that embraces inclusivity across all cultures.

Their story isn’t just about grief and loss—it’s about affection, resilience, and the unifying power of family. This story is part of a series exploring the lesser-known cultural dimensions of palliative care.
